Graduation ruling strikes bad chord with South’s DECA members
Columnist
Sunday May 30, 2010
With Nashua High School South graduation fast approaching on June 20, not everyone is joyful with anticipation. There is serious controversy over which clubs and organizations should be allowed to wear cords or sashes, frustrating many seniors. For years, organizations such as the National Honor Society and DECA have stood out in the crowd thanks to the addition of a colorful sash or cord worn on graduation day. This year, however, DECA members have been mandated to wear only a pin on their graduation gowns. “It’s just so unfair that our own principal isn’t even letting us show our accomplishments on the day of our graduation, and the school has literally been doing this for years,” said senior Monika DuVarney, the DECA secretary. DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an international association of students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service. The DECA program at Nashua High South is extremely popular and well known for running the school store.
Woman OK after fall from Riverwalk
Local
Saturday September 4, 2010
NASHUA – The woman who fell from the Riverwalk near the Peddler’s Daughter last weekend was, contrary to rumors among the city’s homeless community, released from the hospital Thursday. Jessica Cooper, a 21-year-old with no fixed address, somehow slipped over the railing along the city’s Riverwalk on Sunday night and fell 25 feet onto an embankment along the Nashua River. Carol Weeks, the community outreach coordinator at the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, said a rumor that Cooper died has been swirling around the homeless community. A spokesperson at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston said Cooper was released, very much alive, on Thursday. Weeks said soup kitchen staff often try to quash rumors and will sometimes post notices on the tables when important announcements need to be made, like a city homeless person’s death. “We’ll be trying to squelch those rumors,” Weeks said. “We hate rumors for one thing.

Hurricane forecast drums memories of storms passed
Local
Saturday September 4, 2010
For a long time, I just figured the weather people used girls names when they started naming hurricanes because weather, just like sports, the Three Stooges and a phobia of asking directions, is such a guy thing. Even though my little theory was debunked when they brought in the girl-boy-girl-boy naming format, I still can’t seem to convince my women friends that living with The Weather Channel and weather.com and noaawatch.gov and hurricanewatch.com – I could go on – and watching a little wisp of clouds swell into a swirling dynamo without any human assistance is among life’s most magical experiences. As I write this, a partially filtered sun is still managing to keep it pretty hot and humid, and the only breeze is from passing vehicles. The latest dispatches have Earl tracking more and more to the east and weakening, to boot, so it’s a good bet you’ll be spared that weekend yard-cleanup job. Just like those occasional vacations that don’t pan out as well as we’d hoped, it looks like the days we spent playing the tracking, anticipation and guessing game will be the most fun we had with Earl. The other night, as I lulled myself to sleep watching the satellite image of a more-robust Earl’s most recent 48 hours loop over and over, I got to thinking about my very first hurricane, because, as they say, you always remember your first. Her name was Carol, born in the central Bahamas, weened on the warm waters of the Carribbean and Atlantic and making her mark on U.S.
