HOLLIS – Drew Kellner, president of the Beaver Brook Association, announced that Fred Lyford will fill the executive director’s vacancy left when Cliff Simmonds resigned recently. Lyford, a retired Hollis businessman, is no stranger to Beaver Brook, having served on the association’s Board of Trustees for several terms.

It was 50 years ago that White Wing School opened its doors to the children of Nashua. White Wing School, a non-sectarian, non-discriminating, nonprofit preschool and kindergarten for ages 3-6, makes its home in the building adjacent to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua, on the corner of Grove and Canal streets.

Community Action for Sate Teens (CAST) has received a grant from the Greater Nashua Community Prevention Coalition (GNCPC) to support the coalition’s mission to strengthen families and reduce drug and alcohol abuse among teens. GNCPC is funded by the Strategic Prevention Framework administered by the NH Bureau of Drugs and Alcohol Services.

Winter Carnival filled with fun To the editor: Merrimack was treated to a sunny, almost balmy day, for the Parks and Recreation Departments 18th annual Winter Carnival at Wasserman Park. Despite the lack of snow, hundreds of Merrimack residents came to enjoy the beautiful day by taking advantage of the ice fishing derby, playing at the “Norma French Playground” and visiting with the many Merrimack Community Organizations that were on display in the Function Hall.

Through the twists and turns of marbles, the winding path of bowling balls and the crashing of dominoes came Chicago rock band OK Go’s four-month effort to create a two-story Rube Goldberg for their new music video “This Too Shall Pass.” And succeeding OK Go’s Rube Goldberg is the physics class’ similar endeavor at Hollis/Brookline High School.

Purgatory Falls was in the news last year for several reasons. The town of Lyndeborough acquired the Lower Falls (they already owned the Upper Falls), the trails through the area were damaged by the ice storm, and the trail bridges over Black Brook had been destroyed earlier by floods.

Wilton’s Town Hall is a remarkable building with wonderful, fanciful Victorian architecture including its tall clock tower, arched windows and steep gables. But the building that preceded it in that spot was equally marvelous: The Whiting House Hotel, which was built in 1866 and burned in 1874 in a fire that destroyed most of Main Street.
