AnotherPerspective0830 Another birthday for town with ties

Local

Monday August 30, 2010

This year marks the 275th anniversary of the founding of Salem-Canada, the grant of a township as payment of debts by the commonwealth of Massachusetts to veterans, or descendants of veterans, of a failed and expensive expedition against Canada in 1690. We weren’t properly chartered as the town of Lyndeborough by the province of New Hampshire until 1764. In between, we were chartered as Lyndeborough by the Masonian Proprietors, men named to settle a grant of land made to John Mason by the Council of Plymouth in 1629.

Harbor Homes’ Connections Program continues evolving

Local

Thursday August 26, 2010

NASHUA – Less than six months ago, the Connections Program operated by Harbor Homes was in jeopardy of closing. Thanks to the community, a softball fundraiser and a large donation from an anonymous board member, Connections was saved. Connections, founded in 1984 as The Gathering Place, has helped countless local people dealing with homelessness and mental illness overcome social and personal issues over the years. “When The Gathering Place opened, there were few opportunities for homeless individuals or folks living with mental illness to socialize,” said Nathan Goodwin, Connections program manager.

NOT Just An Ugly Dog

Local

Monday August 30, 2010

As chair of the committee to put together a fundraiser on behalf of the Milford Lions, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify any misconceptions readers may have concerning the dog contest that the Milford Lions will be holding on September 5th. This contest is NOT by any means a contest for dog owners to think that it is to ridicule or seek out ugly dogs. It is not the intention of this contest to do so and anyone thinking so, should be so informed NOW that it is NOT.

Looking back 60 years at Korean War

Military

Monday August 23, 2010

U.S. Forces Korea is gearing up for a full range of activities that began this summer, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War and the strong U.S./South Korea alliance that maintains stability on the Korean peninsula. In today’s age, the protection of South Korea has become more important with the North Koreans rattling their nuclear sword. For three years of brutal fighting, the United Nations and America ended up in the same place as the start of the war – the 38th parallel – and there has never been a peace treaty signed. The Korean War has been called a police action, the “Forgotten War” and others names. We were in the Korean War for three years and lost 54,000 men and women.

NNCOL627 Nashua North seniors have range of emotions after graduating

Columnist

Sunday June 27, 2010

The diverse feelings of Nashua High School North’s class of 2010 were well represented in the many unique ways they decorated their graduation caps on June 20. From a high view at Manchester’s Verizon Wireless Arena, the graduates were a rainbow of colors. Some caps were bedazzled, as well.

ALVCOL627 Alvirne seniors’ 12-year journey comes to end

Columnist

Sunday June 27, 2010

Twelve years ago, we hopped and skipped joyously to the bright yellow school bus, away from our teary-eyed moms, wearing our Pokemon and Barbie backpacks and anxious about our very first day of school. We had no idea what awaited us at school, but it was still exciting because we were finally “big kids” like our older brothers and sisters. At school, what awaited us were new friends, colorful classrooms with laminated bears on the wall teaching us all the colors, and white erase boards with the words, “Welcome to first grade. My name is Mrs.

NSCOL620 South seniors celebrate the end of their journey

Monday June 21, 2010

Even though senior year is coming to an end, the fun is just beginning. Nashua High School South seniors had their last official day of school on June 9 and attended the prom on June 11. And the prom wasn’t the end of senior festivities, as Senior Week officially kicked off Monday. “Senior Week is a time for South seniors to come together and celebrate their accomplishments,” senior class Vice President Ashley Stebbins said. No matter their personal interests, each member of the senior class comes together and celebrates as one.

SOUCOL620 Souhegan celebrates its compassionate graduates

“Dear Stranger, You intrigue me. Love, Your Fellow Human.” The note was taped to the chair on which I would be sitting for the remainder of the Souhegan High School graduation ceremony. As “Pomp and Circumstance” faded slowly, I looked to my right to see the girl I had marched beside in the first-grade Halloween parade had a similar note on her chair. I heard my name called behind me as an old friend I hadn’t talked to in a while reached to hug me.

Cows an important part of living in New Hampshire

Another Perspective

Monday June 14, 2010

I don’t think it was ever said that New Hampshire, unlike Vermont, had more cows than people, but there was a time, not too long ago, when we were frequently called “Cow Hampshire.” Cows have been a part of our life since the first documented cow arrived in Portsmouth in 1634, and they are still a mainstay of our agriculture. Former Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Taylor is a dairy farmer in Meriden Village, near Lebanon. After serving the state for 25 years, he returned to farming.

Tales and tribulations of Purgatory Falls

Another Perspective

Monday January 18, 2010

Purgatory Falls was in the news last year for several reasons. The town of Lyndeborough acquired the Lower Falls (they already owned the Upper Falls), the trails through the area were damaged by the ice storm, and the trail bridges over Black Brook had been destroyed earlier by floods. The steep gorge has great scenery and is one of the more popular walking sites in the area.
