In recent years, Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative has become well known among other New Hampshire schools for its Destination ImagiNation program. Destination ImagiNation is an extraordinary nonprofit organization that provides students with the chance to learn and experience firsthand creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. By working through various fun and challenging problems, students are able to unleash their imaginations and begin to take unique approaches to difficult situations. There is no doubt that Destination ImagiNation is an excellent way to recognize creativity among youth and distinguish future leaders, and in the last few years, the program has gradually caught more and more attention in the Wilton-Lyndeborough school system. However, this year, the program has truly taken flight.

Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative has recently experienced an exciting new surge of technology known as the smart board. The futuristic idea of an interactive whiteboard that enhances standard curriculum with both an auditory and visual multimedia experience is now reality at the school. Thanks to a federal grant affiliated with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law that regulates how states provide special education to children with disabilities, WLC has obtained four Promethean smart boards. The Promethean interactive whiteboard is a large display that connects to a computer. It provides a unique opportunity for students in that they can combine the vast capabilities of a computer with the simplicity of a classic whiteboard. Using a smart board, students are able to fully immerse themselves in subjects, as well as use vector-based graphics that increase understanding, access educational Web sites and save their work in convenient, easily accessible files. The collaborative educational experience provided by a smart board is intended to help the progress of special education students especially.

Our car of enthusiastic teenage girls arrived in Boston at around 8 a.m., and we boarded the subway shortly after.

WILTON – An overlooked provision in the state statutes has postponed a decision by the Zoning Board of Adjustment concerning the height of a cell phone tower proposed on Curtis Farm Road. That stipulation says all “municipalities within a 20-mile radius from which the tower can be seen” must be notified. A balloon test designed to show residents how visible the tower would be could be seen from the Carnival Hill ball fields, which include parts of Lyndeborough and Milford. The board agreed to hold a special meeting at the earliest possible date “which met all of the notification requirements.” It will meet at 7:30 p.m.
Years later, school now up to code

WILTON – After three years of concentrated effort, Florence Rideout Elementary School will meet all current state life safety codes when school opens next month. “The final renovations are ahead of schedule,” Principal Ken Griffin said July 27. The work is being done by Aho Construction of New Ipswich. Among the last items on the fire marshal’s list was enclosing one of the two grand staircases in the hall of the 1895 “old building.” The staircase closest to the door to the gym is now enclosed and fire doors will be installed. In days way gone by, that staircase was the “boys’ stairs.” The two stairways are now designated “up” and “down.” “The idea is contain smoke in case of a fire,” Griffin said. He noted that the fire marshal is “very pleased” with the plan and progress. The original lower hall filled the entire center of the school, which was entered through a large front door.
