From the outside looking in, Room A212 at Souhegan High School may have appeared a bit messy and chaotic on Oct. 23. Students, however, had the decorating of more than 270 pumpkins under control, and the motivation to complete a task that would serve the community. The pumpkins, donated by Lull Farm and Amherst Garden Center, were painted, organized and packaged by the Ethics Forum, a student group dedicated to making a local, national or global change.

All of the checkpoints had been completed: senior project, AP testing and finals.

Whoever says teenagers are lazy, ignorant, Internet-crazed adolescents who contribute nothing to society is sadly mistaken. The Souhegan High School Ethics Forum, a group of students dedicated to making an annual local, national or global change in their community, proves that motivated teenagers can make a significant difference in the world around them. The Ethics Forum is composed of about 20 upperclassmen who meet twice a week to discuss, organize and plan fundraisers and events to raise money for a cause of their choice.

Spring at Souhegan High School plays host to many events: the prom, finals and the always intriguing Rent-A-Senior Day. This year, that last event fell on April 10. Described by students as “chill” and “a lot of fun,” this unique fundraiser has been a staple of the senior class for at least 13 years, according to World Studies teacher Dick Miller. The day consists of faculty, juniors, sophomores or freshmen “renting,” or using the services of, a senior for one day.

Not many people can say they’ve ever been to a dance team competition, let alone one in New Hampshire. But last weekend, Souhegan High School hosted the first New Hampshire High School Dance Team Competition, drawing enthusiastic dancers and excited crowds from all over southern New Hampshire. Bedford and Con-Val joined in the excitement while bringing their own unique styles to Souhegan’s gym. The event was competitive, but also an incredible amount of fun. Senior Micayla Gilligan, who attended the event, enthusiastically said the competition was “so good.” Stephanie O’Rourke, another senior attendee, added that although she enjoyed all the styles, she particularly thought “Con-Val was very interesting.” Senior Chandler Wallisch enjoyed the audience size, adding, “I’m glad a large crowd came to support the dance team.

Gribble may argue he was insane

Local

Wednesday July 21, 2010

NASHUA – One of the five men charged in connection with the killing of a Mont Vernon mother and the attack on her daughter may argue he was insane at the time of the alleged murder. Christopher Gribble’s attorneys filed a motion at Hillsborough County Superior Court on Monday reserving the right to argue that Gribble’s actions Oct. 4 were “a product of a mental disease of defect.” The motion also states that the defense team may argue that the state cannot prove that Gribble “acted with the mental states as alleged in the indictments.” Gribble is accused of breaking into 4 Trow Road during the early morning hours of Oct.

JewPond0719 Algae-ridden Jew Pond in Mont Vernon has a history

Local

Tuesday July 20, 2010

MONT VERNON – The news that a small pond in Mont Vernon was closed last week due to an algae bloom drew attention, but not just for environmental reasons. Another attention- getter was the water body’s name: Jew Pond. That name, says Mont Vernon Historical Society President Keith Pomeroy, dates to World War I, when the quarter-acre pond was made by owners or operators of the nearby Grand Hotel during the town’s heydey as a summer vacation spot for people from Boston, New York and beyond.

Mont Vernon Main Street store sale yields no buyers

Local

Friday June 25, 2010

MONT VERNON – Although a number of people called to inquire about it, no one showed up at Thursday’s auction of the Mont Vernon General Store Building and adjoining house, except a few interested neighbors. The Monadnock Community Bank of Peterborough purchased the two properties for $150,000. Auctioneer Steve Bonnette said he had received “a half a dozen calls earlier in the day” and expected at least a few people to show up. Wayne Gordon, representing the bank, said the buildings would be cleaned out and offered for sale. Right now the interior of the store is as it was left with empty shelving. The store closed permanently at the first of the year, after town boards denied a variance for store operators Julie Whitcomb and Matt Gelbwaks to build a new store and deli at the corner of Francestown Turnpike and Route 13. There has been a general store on the Main Street site since the mid 1800s. Whitcomb was one of those who came to watch and said she and her husband had no interest in owning property, but she “might like to manage a store again.”
