As chair of the committee to put together a fundraiser on behalf of the Milford Lions, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify any misconceptions readers may have concerning the dog contest that the Milford Lions will be holding on September 5th. This contest is NOT by any means a contest for dog owners to think that it is to ridicule or seek out ugly dogs. It is not the intention of this contest to do so and anyone thinking so, should be so informed NOW that it is NOT.

MILFORD – In celebration of its 25th year, Little Arrows Child Care Services is giving away one free year of child care. Established in 1985 by James and Lorraine Thibodeau as a privately owned child care center, Little Arrows Day Care incorporated in 1990 and became known as Little Arrows Child Care Services. In August, 1992, it became a nonprofit organization, opening the door for Little Arrows to become a child care and family service organization. “Little Arrows is not just a child care center, but a center that truly cares and takes the time to get to know the families that it serves,” said Janet Bragdon, the organization’s executive director. “The Little Arrows experience is one that lasts a lifetime,” added Gary Daniels, Little Arrows’ board chairman.

MILFORD – As if parents didn’t have enough to worry about, summer is about to arrive with a multitude of dangers lurking in these lazy crazy days. Bikes, pools, skateboards, playgrounds, barbecue grills are responsible for many emergency room visits this time of year. And then there’s sunburn, poison ivy, Lyme disease and fireworks – it’s almost enough to make parents want to keep their kids inside. But a little common sense instruction, especially from the right adults, will go a long way toward helping kids stay safe. Those right adults could be the local police officers and firefighters who will be at a free community fair Saturday at the Stop & Shop Plaza in Milford. Sponsored by St.

What it means to be a hero to a girl growing up

Editor’s Note: This was submitted by Morgan Mason as her college essay. The soft-spoken, redheaded man visited the apartment just as he had many times before. He lay on the itchy, cat-fur-infested shag rug – surprisingly, with no allergic reaction to the animal he had feared his entire life. Even then, lying on the small child’s bedroom floor, laughing and playing the whole afternoon, he showed potential as a parent. The man had been welcomed into the girl’s heart.

ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE ON MISSING ROADS

There is that old joke, usually attributed to some Yankee farmer, who ends up telling the tourist who is asking for directions, “you can’t get there from here.” The joke usually includes some local landmarks that the tourist couldn’t possibly know, leaving the farmer exasperated. But there are a few places around the area where that designation could be considered true, even if not literally. Lyndeborough’s first major subdivision is called Tarn Road. To get there, you have to go into Mont Vernon. The lower Purgatory Falls is also in Lyndeborough, but to drive there, you have to go into Milford. A large subdivision is planned off of Lyndeborough’s Cram Hill Road, but all of the houses will be in Wilton. The Falcon Ridge Development in the Milford has some access off Whting Hill Road in Wilton. Being dependent on another town for services can, on occasion, cause problems, but most are worked out amicably. Many towns have dirt roads with few or no houses where it is simply easier or more convenient to drive around into the next town.

Milford Fletcher site use being considered
Local
Wednesday August 25, 2010
MILFORD – Five years ago, selectmen considered a plan to build an unusual Vietnam War memorial on the Fletcher Superfund site after cleanup is complete. The idea for the multimillion- dollar interactive park, with a mock minefield and statues of Viet Cong snipers, was ultimately rejected. But that left the question of what to do with the Elm Street property after the federal Environmental Protection Agency has completed its work. On Monday night , selectmen looked at a plan to turn the area into a 24-space paved parking lot, with a walking path connecting Keyes Park with Jacques School and a trail along the Souhegan River.
Woman’s fourth criminal case dropped
Local
Friday August 20, 2010
MILFORD – Judge Paul Moore on Wednesday afternoon agreed to drop charges in district court against a woman accused of threatening her brother with a knife Tuesday – her fourth arrest since Memorial Day – on condition that she complies with the Nashua mental health court. The mental-health court is a collaboration between the Nashua-area community mental health system and the local criminal justice system. Under those conditions, Adrienne Valdez, 28, must be under the care of a psychiatrist and a case worker, taking medication and undergoing therapy to treat a diagnosed mental illness. Valdez was arrested Memorial Day and accused of attacking three Amherst Ambulance Service EMTs who responded to her call for help. She allegedly punched, bit and jumped on EMTs Lynn Briggs, Sandra Power and Carylyn McEntee, causing injuries that have prevented them from working since the incident. On Tuesday, Julian Valdez was not injured during an argument when his sister allegedly pulled a kitchen knife on him and threatened him with it. But Adrienne Valdez was transported to the Milford Medical Center and treated for a cut to the arm. Afterward, she was arrested, charged with one felony count of criminal threatening, and taken to Milford District Court for a bail hearing. Valdez is currently facing charges in Mont Vernon, Nashua and Wilton. Valdez’s probable cause hearing was scheduled for 1 p.m.

2 sidewalks new near Brookline schools
Local
Tuesday August 17, 2010
BROOKLINE – Parents and children can thank the federal grant program called “Safe Routes to School” for two new sidewalks completed last week outside the Richard Maghakian Memorial School and Captain Samuel Douglass Academy. “It gets the kids off the street and onto the sidewalk,” said Selectman Clarence Farwell. The $105,000 grant awarded to the town two years ago provided funding for an engineering study and construction. Meridian Land Services Inc., of Amherst, designed the project. The contract for the work was awarded to Jerry Farwell, the town road agent, and lowest bidder. Farwell, who is the son of Selectman Farwell and former School Board member Marcia Farwell, has built a number of projects in town over the years. Farwell was the low bidder on another recent project, but he was not offered the contract after the Federal Highway Administration rejected his bid, citing a conflict of interest. The contract was later awarded to CSSI Construction of Merrimack for roughly $10,000 more than Farwell’s offer. Of the two school sidewalks finished last week, the longest – 1,300 feet – was placed outside the Richard Maghakian Memorial School on Milford Street, on the same side of the road as the town ballfield. It extends north to Austin Road. The smaller project, a 200-foot sidewalk, was built along Townsend Hill Road, outside Captain Samuel Douglass Academy. Both sidewalks were built behind telephone polls to distance walkers from passing traffic. Last summer, the design company expected to begin its work before the start of the school year.
