The boards of directors of United Way of Merrimack County, North Country United Way and Heritage United Way have unanimously approved a letter of intent to merge their three United Way organizations into a single UW entity. The newly formed UW is being supported by the three organizations and is viewed as a logical step to unify these closely integrated organizations.

MERRIMACK – When Ed and Loretta Kathryn Fleming, of Merrimack, first met, it was at a roller skating rink where they had regularly skated together to organ music during the 1940s, just after the close of World War II. The roller skating rink had just been converted from an equestrian show arena.

Before they can take the field or skate out on the rink, many New Hampshire student- athletes and their families are being asked to shell out a fee to help cover the cost of school district sports. Commonly referred to as pay-to-play, roughly one-third of high schools across the state have implemented some type of fee for students who choose to play sports, especially those with a higher per-player cost, said Patrick Corbin, director of the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association.

MERRIMACK – A new recycling program in Merrimack seems to be picking up. It’s been two months since the town implemented single stream recycling, but in that time, Merrimack has picked up 40 percent more recyclables at the transfer station, said Public Works Director Rick Seymour.
