BROOKLINE – The paint job of two canary yellow coats, four coats of fire engine red and four clear coats provides the automotive shine that many wouldn’t expect to find on a lawn mower. “I have the shiniest mower, and that’s all that matters,” said Paul Knightly, a Brookline volunteer firefighter. Knightly isn’t getting his mower ready to cut grass, but to mow down the competition at Brookline’s annual lawn mower races, which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Hollis/Brookline seniors ready to take wing

This morning, I was sitting on my front porch peering into the sunlight sparkling on the water that lay in front of me. As I enjoyed the first morning of my summer vacation, I noticed a mother duck and her ducklings, waddling along the shoreline, one after another. On June 12, Hollis/Brookline High School’s class of 2010 similarly marched to the stage where our diplomas awaited us. In the words of senior Russell Curry, it was a “surreal experience.” And as many of us look back on the day, one thing comes to mind: the soggy weather that fell over the lacrosse field that day.

The senior class began their excursion at the Moose River Outpost in Jackman, Maine.

Hot weather has officially dawned on Hollis/Brookline High School, bringing heat waves into the already humid hallways. Students are buzzing with anticipation for summer vacation, waiting anxiously for the end of the school year. In the meantime, however, activities are being held to celebrate the sun – such as Field Day, powder puff football and, on Saturday, the first Aloha Luau. Hosted by the Culinary Club, the luau was planned as a summer-based party to take place in a Hawaiian setting. Scheduled activities were limbo challenges, hula-hoop contests and live music, as well as an original menu planned by the cooking club.

However, on Sunday, May 23, it was the girls who were playing instead. Senior Alyssa Landolt implemented powder puff football at Hollis/Brookline High School after senior Patrick Clark gave her the idea. The event was held as a fundraiser in which all of the proceeds went to the Suzan G.

Is Hollis/Brookline ready for a new principal? What will he or she be like? The answers to all these questions will be unknown to the students until next year.
Brookline woman indicted on attempted murder charge
Local
Thursday September 2, 2010
A Brookline woman accused of stabbing her sister in the chest with a letter opener was indicted last week for attempted murder, among other charges. Meeting Friday, a Hillsborough County grand jury agreed there is sufficient evidence to charge Priscilla Anne Chamberlin with first-degree assault after the July 11 incident in which she allegedly stabbed her sister in the chest several times with a letter opener. According to a court affidavit, the incident started when Chamberlin, 46 at the time, and her sister, Kelly Ballou, had been discussing an “issue” that began as a series of text message exchanges on their cell phones, Ballou told police. Ballou told police Chamberlin had opened the door to Ballou’s bedroom in the home they share at 3 Meeting House Hill Road and began stabbing her, the affidavit said. Brookline police responded to the home and found Chamberlin locked in her room, officers said at the time. They broke through the door and found her in bed with several drops of blood on her shirt and a silver letter opener on the floor, the affidavit said. The attempted murder indictment, handed up Friday, is punishable by up to life in State Prison, according to court documents.

BROOKLINE – Acting Police Chief Michael Kurland is among 15 candidates who have applied for the position of Brookline police chief. The Board of Selectmen and the seven-member police chief search committee met in a nonpublic session Monday night for roughly 90 minutes, resumed the public portion of their meeting briefly and adjourned without discussing the search. The search committee was scheduled to present the board with the names of between three and five finalists for the post. Kurland has occupied the position since Thomas Goulden was fired at the end of April, without cause.

BROOKLINE – A search committee appointed by the Board of Selectmen to help find a new police chief plans to turn over a list of three to five names for selectmen’s consideration tonight. Fifteen candidates, including acting Police Chief Michael Kurland, have applied for the job, which has been vacant since the end of April when the board fired Police Chief Thomas Goulden without giving a reason. Goulden hired an attorney to fight the dismissal and the two parties settled out of court. In June, after the Board of Selectmen invited residents to participate in the selection process, 19 people expressed interest. Selectmen whittled the list down to seven members, choosing a diverse group with expertise in human resources, law enforcement and community service. The board’s meeting tonight begins at 6:30, and selectmen are scheduled to go into a nonpublic meeting at 7 to discuss the search committee’s recommendations. The board has not set a deadline for naming a new chief.

BROOKLINE – When it comes to work and love, sometimes a man gets lucky. George “Joe” Joki, who died Tuesday at the age of 72, was one of those men. Owner and operator of Brookline Motors since 1973, Joki spent close to a half century doing what he loved most: running a garage and towing service. It was the towing, however, that put the sparkle in his eye and the spring in his step. “The deeper the car in the mud, the better he loved it,” said Fire Chief Charlie Corey, whose parents, Erwin and Hazel, were close friends with Joki and his wife, Esther. When Joki was a teenager, recalled Selectman Clarence Farwell, he spent his time hanging out at the local garages, watching the mechanics work and offering a hand. “It was the love of automobile,” said Farwell, who knew Joki for roughly 50 years through business and community involvements. Joki began his career in Townsend, Mass., at the E.C. Fessenden Co., a car dealership.
