SOUCOL221 Fang Fest sets Souhegan High School apart

Sunday February 21, 2010

Souhegan High School has always been different from other high schools. There’s the grading system, which is divided into seven learner expectations. Then there’s advisory, a group of about 10 kids and one teacher who meet every day to touch base about the pressures of high school life. But Souhegan’s flashiest event might just be what most sets it apart from other schools: Fang Fest. Named for Souhegan’s Saber mascot, Fang Fest is the typical spirit week, only ramped up a few notches. Nearly all the school participates, including staff, and while generally good-natured, there’s also a serious competitive edge. Around Fang Fest time, the school breaks into four heated rivalries: freshmen versus sophomores versus juniors versus seniors.

SOUCOL27 Souhegan students get early introduction to common work-force problem

Sunday February 7, 2010

Every weekday morning, many Souhegan High School students make their way through the quiet village of Amherst in their cars in order to arrive at school on time by 7:30. However, most students run into a slight problem by the time they’re within 2 or 3 miles of the school on Boston Post Road: They find themselves trapped in a traffic backup that would seem to make more sense if it were 6 p.m. and they were on Route 101A. It’s a strange phenomenon that anyone trying to pass through Boston Post Road in Amherst – a town with a population of about 11,000 – must idle in 15 minutes of traffic each morning of a school day.

SOUCOL1213 Invest in teaching, not monitoring, SHS students

Monday December 14, 2009

Some members of the Amherst and Mont Vernon communities are urging Souhegan High School to install security cameras to monitor student actions. They cite the recent tragedy in Mont Vernon as evidence that the school needs a monitoring system. Security cameras wouldn’t benefit the Souhegan community, and they would, in fact, strain the safe environment that exists at the school. It’s unfortunate that some have decided to lash out at the environment of trust at Souhegan that teachers, students and administrators work so hard to maintain.

Road repair means smooth ride for buses

Local

Friday September 3, 2010

AMHERST – School buses and all traffic began rolling along Spring Road this week on a brand-new, two-and-a-half inch layer of three-quarter aggregate stone – which in layman’s terms means a much-smoother, gentler ride. Continental Paving Inc. crews finished laying the asphalt base in plenty of time for Wednesday’s first day of school, the goal that was established when the project began in late spring, public works director Bruce Berry said. The summer-long project to reconstruct or repair a roughly 1.8-mile section of Spring Road is the first in what will be several years’ worth of similar road projects under the multi-year, $15 million road bond passed by voters in March. The bond is funding about 80 percent of the project, with the remainder covered by the town maintenance budget. Berry said planning for the next project, a roughly 4,200-foot stretch of Amherst Street from Miles to Juniper roads, is already under way.

Amherst gets back to school despite heat wave

Local

Friday September 3, 2010

AMHERST – While the late-summer heat wave led some districts to close schools this week, it was business as usual – with a few little tweaks – in Amherst and Mont Vernon. “Everyone’s taking it in stride,” district superintendent Mary Jennings said Thursday. “Teachers have gotten pretty creative, if their room is too warm they take their classes outside under trees, where there’s at least a breeze,” she said.

newsAmhTownPicnic0817 Old, young savor mood at Amherst’s annual picnic

Local

Thursday August 19, 2010

AMHERST – At an event that celebrated the town’s ancestry and longevity, some of its youngest residents were the ones who stole the show. Perhaps it was the lively beat of the always-entertaining Amoskeag Strummers that lured more than a few small fry from parental laps and beach blankets at Wednesday evening’s Old Fashioned Town Picnic, the latest in a yearlong series of events celebrating the 250th anniversary of Amherst’s 1760 founding. But whatever it was surely delighted their elders, who broke into big smiles as they clapped to some of their Ragtime favorites. Scores of townfolk and bordertown visitors toting snacks, sandwiches, lemonade, potato salad, watermelon and other summer picnic staples set out chairs and blankets for the evening of music and socializing, ideally emulating a popular tradition that’s pretty much, well, gone the way of the horse and buggy. On a blanket under an old oak tree, 3-year-old Cameron Conescu was perfectly content watching the Strummers and rocking back and forth to the beat.
