Police use Taser on 1 in burglary
MERRIMACK – A Merrimack teenager was shot with a Taser on Wednesday morning after police caught him and a friend burglarizing a Belmont Drive home, police said.
Police were called to Belmont Drive around 10 a.m., when a resident reported seeing two suspicious people near a neighbor’s house, Merrimack police Lt. Denise Roy said.
Officers responded and found two teenagers, Kyle Barka, 17, of 7 Coleman Path in Merrimack, and Sean Walker, 17, of 39 Mallard Point in Merrimack, burglarizing a home, Roy said.
Walker fled on foot and was pursued for about three minutes by Merrimack police officer Phil Landsteiner, according to Merrimack police Lt. Paul Trepaney.
The chase went through the woods and over at least one fence while along the way, Walker discarded some of the items taken from the house, Trepaney said.
At one point, Walker made what Landsteiner determined could have been a move toward a weapon of some sort, and so the officer used the Taser on him while he was still fleeing, Trepaney said.
“He made a movement that concerned the officer when he deployed the Taser,” Trepaney said. “You never know when you go into these burglaries.”
Merrimack police have carried Tasers since 2002, Trepaney said, and were one of the first departments in the state to buy them. The device fires two electrodes attached to wires, using compressed air cartridges. The electrodes deliver a shock when they strike the target. Officers have only had to use them “a handful” of times, he said.
Walker and Barka were leaving or had just left the house when officers arrived. They had forced their way into the home and had taken jewelry and prescription medications, Trepaney said.
Both teens were booked at Merrimack Police Department on $10,000 cash only bail.
They are to be arraigned in Milford District Court today, Roy said.
Walker is charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.
Barka is charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and criminal trespass, Roy said.
Police are still investigating the incident and ask that anyone with information call the Merrimack Police Criminal Investigation Unit at 424-3774, Roy said.
