Cashing gold can aid abuse struggle

Published: Monday, February 1, 2010

NASHUA – Prevention Makes Cents will be hosting a Heart of Gold Wine & Cheese Fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Crowne Plaza.

Did you know that more than 3 million cases are reported and investigated each year nationwide for child abuse and that most of the time it is committed by someone the child knows and trusts? Children younger than 4 are at greatest risk for all types of child abuse. That is why we are asking you to have a heart and join Prevention Makes Cents in raising funds to prevent child abuse and neglect while cashing in unwanted gold and walking away with a check that night.

Party of Gold will host the event. A trained specialist will evaluate your gold, and you will receive a check for competitive market value that night. Party of Gold will donate 15 percent of its proceeds to Prevention Makes Cents.

Prevention Makes Cents is a nonprofit organization and project of the Parent Information Center whose mission is to prevent and decrease the incidence of child abuse and neglect through school-based prevention education and parenting outreach initiatives. Money raised will go directly to programs that teach children how to handle situations involving bullying, abduction and uncomfortable touching by a known person. Research shows that children feel more confident and are more likely to report an unsafe situation after attending a personal safety program.

In addition to providing educational workshop for children, teachers and childcare professionals, Prevention Makes Cents provides programming as a collaborative member of the newly formed Family Resource Center of Greater Nashua, which is at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua. These programs are open to all parents and are free of charge. In February, workshops addressing parent stress, what to do with tax refund money, parent support groups, playgroups for young children and their parents and a series of workshops “Just for Dads” will be offered.
