NASHUA – The Training Institute in Nashua is offering caregivers a three-part series on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on three consecutive Wednesday afternoons this winter.
The series begins Feb. 17 and is open to the public. Topics to be covered are appropriate for both professionals and caregivers. Each session will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 45 High St. The cost for attending is $30 per session or all three sessions for $75.
The first session Feb. 17 is “An Overview of Alzheimer’s” and will focus on what the disease is and how to maximize functional independence, self-esteem and morale.
The Feb. 24 session is “Communications” and will identify ways to communicate effectively with the Alzheimer’s/dementia patient and how to handle varying behaviors, including sexuality. Additionally, an overview of daily living activities will be discussed.
The final session March 3 is “Caring for the Family and Ourselves as Caregivers.” Topics include the grieving process, how family members are adversely affected by the disease, and the importance of caregivers caring for themselves.
Participants have the opportunity to meet others working in the same field or going through the same challenging family experience.
Those attending all three sessions will receive certificates of attendance.
Pre-registration for all three classes is required. Contact Carolyn McLaughlin at c.mclaughlin@harbor homes.org or 882-3616 to register.
