The first semester has just concluded at Alvirne High School with midterm exams this past week, and students are ready to jump into the second half of the year on Monday.

For seniors, this will be their last 86 days in high school before their graduation, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 19 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

Students and parents of students in any Hudson school should note that on Tuesday, the school district will have its first of two early release days.

According to the school district’s Web site, “Alvirne High School will release students at 11:20 a.m. on January 26 and March 23; Hudson Memorial School students will be released at 11:30 a.m.; and elementary school students will be released at 12:30 p.m. There will be no afternoon sessions of kindergarten or preschool on these two early release days.”

This will be followed by no school on Wednesday, as teachers have a workshop day. Classes will resume as normal on Thursday.

Parent Evening

The guidance department will hold an eighth-grade Parent Evening from 6:30-9 p.m. Feb. 3 for the parents of students who’ll be attending Alvirne in September.

Parents will receive their student’s level recommendation form in addition to learning about the course selection process. Attendees will hear from each of the school’s department chairs about program offerings and course-specific material.

Parents will be given the opportunity to schedule individual appointments with guidance counselors, which will begin the week of March 8.

Those unable to attend should call 886-1260, ext. 4, to schedule an appointment.

The snow date is 6:30 p.m. March 3.

Semiformal dance

The Student Council hosted the annual semiformal dance in the C.J. Steckevicz Gymnasium on Saturday night. Several hundred students attended and enjoyed the evening of dancing and food.

School evening events to come include the hypnotist show, the Mr. AHS competition and prom fashion show, the annual dodgeball tournament and the senior prom.

Meteorologist visit

On Jan. 11, Alvirne was visited by local meteorologist Al Kaprielian, who appeared on the next day’s airing of Studio 19, the school’s TV station.

Kaprielian, who recently went off air as a result of cutbacks at MyTV in New Hampshire, gave the school an extended forecast in a prerecorded segment. Students flocked into the studio for autographs after Kaprielian finished the after-school taping session.

Kaprielian had visited the school in past years, as well, giving the forecast and informing students of any incoming “high preshah!”

Ben Naglieri is a senior at Alvirne High School in Hudson.
