Newcomers’ to host new member coffee

The Amherst Area Newcomers’ Club will host a coffee/tea Thursday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Join if you are new to the area and would like to learn more about our group or not so new and looking for new, exciting things to do. This year we have eleven “special interest groups” ranging from the ever-popular Book Group to the Charity Group.

The club meets at Cassidy’s Grille, 25 Route 101A, on the second Thursday of each month.

Sign up for woman’s club trip to NYC

The Hollis Woman’s Club is once again holding it’s annual New York City day trip.

Take your friends and family along Saturday, Dec. 12, for a relaxing ride down to the Big Apple on a luxury bus and get ready to enjoy the holiday lights on 5th Avenue! The itinerary is up to you, but guidebooks and maps are included.

The bus will leave at 6 a.m. from Nashua and return before midnight. The ride is $60 per person.

Anna Keyes Powers DAR to meet

The Anna Keyes Powers chapter of DAR will meet Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the home of Sallie Klum. Co-hostess is Laura Simmons.

A special guest will be the New Hampshire state Regent Sarah Voll, and guest speaker will be Marilyn Dawson, docent at the Currier Museum of Art, whose topic will be “From Anonymous to Aponovich.” Guests are welcome.

Join landscaping talk club meeting

Do you have space in your yard that you would love to change but don’t know where to begin? Hear Marcy Stanton of the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Office discuss “Integrated Landscaping” at the next meeting of the Milford Garden Club today at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church Parish House, 10 Union St.

Stanton will introduce some easy techniques to get you started on creating a sustainable and beautiful landscape. Learn how to think of plant systems rather than plant specimens as you apply a holistic approach to your landscape.

Toastmasters receive awards

Two Milford Toastmasters members topped the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest held in Nashua recently. 

Elizabeth Clark of Amherst got the audience laughing with the Best Humorous Speech of the night, while Jewelie Lewis of Brookline demonstrated evaluation skills, critiquing another contestant’s speech for the evaluation portion of the contest. Both Clark and Lewis honed their skills at their home club Milford Toastmasters meetings, held every second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. at the Amato Center for the Performing Arts in Milford. They won at club level before heading to Nashua to compete against other area club winners and will now advance to the division contest Saturday in White River Junction, Vt.

Holistic Moms to hold meeting

The Hillsborough County Chapter of the Holistic Moms Network will present “Say ‘Yes” to a Strong Immune System” with Carolyn Kelley. Join herbalist Kelley as she shares her knowledge about herbs and whole foods as well as essential oils and flower essences that can help you stay healthy, especially during the fall and winter months.

The meeting will be held Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Super Stop & Shop (second floor conference room) at 601 Nashua St.

AARP Chapter 622 to hold luncheon

Join the Nashua AARP Chapter 622 in welcoming Jane Rothwell, RN, LNC, and president of Procare Senior Services on Thursday at the Holiday Inn on Northeastern Boulevard.

Rothwell has dedicated her life to enhancing the lives of seniors in Greater Nashua. She will be sharing and discussing all the new and exciting services that keep seniors safe at home and independent for as long as they want to be. The doors open at 11:30 a.m. with lunch to be served at noon.

The menu for the luncheon this month is roast pork with applesauce, dessert and coffee and tea and costs $15.

DAR holding annual essay contest

The Matthew Thornton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring the DAR American History Essay Contest for or 2009-10. Students in grade 5, 6, 7, and 8 in public, private, parochial schools or those who are home schoolers are eligible.

This year’s topic is “Describe how you felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad.” Students pretend they are either a settler planning to use the train to travel to a new home in the West, an Irish or Chinese worker who helped build the line, or a Native American whose way of life was greatly affected by the railroad.

This is a national contest with local, state and national winners. For more information, call 424-8453.

Roses made easy

The Nashua Garden Club will hold its meeting Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St. The speaker will be David Cannistraro, who will discuss “Roses Made Easy.”

Cannistraro is a past president of the New England Rose Society, an American Rose Society master rosarian and ARS horticultural rose judge. He is also a partner with Cynthia Fraser in “Just Roses,” a specialty rose garden business, where they design, select, plant and maintain rose gardens. Cannistraro will bring plants and materials.

Nashua Republican Committee to meet

The Nashua Republican City Committee monthly meeting will be held Thursday at Nashua City Hall, third floor auditorium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Special guest speaker is Ovide Lamontagne, potential candidate for U.S. Senate. This meeting is open to the public.

Hannah Dustin Quilt Guild to meet

Quilt artist Cary Flanagan is the featured speaker at today’s meeting of Hannah Dustin Quilt Guild.

An accomplished artist in many creative avenues, Flanagan is well known for her “Moonglow” quilts and authored “Moon Dance: A Quilters’ Journey.” A workshop is offered after the meeting for those pre-registered.

The meeting will take place at 9 a.m. at the Hudson Community Center on Lions Avenue.

Hannah Dustin Quilt Guild is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the art and craft of quilting and is comprised of members with a wide range of interests and abilities.
